چکیده

Since widespread commercial use of wireless technology is still many years off, there is very little data to determine what constitutes an accurate model for wireless traffic. Many recent studies have shown that landline network traffic does not follow a traditional Poisson model but instead exhibits self-similar behavior. Previous papers have introduced and analyzed the performance of fundamental classes of energy conserving protocols under traditional Poisson models. In order to evaluate these protocols under a distribution which might more accurately depict future wireless network traffic, we use simulation and proven models to consider the trade-off between energy and delay under a self-similar arrival distribution.

On the Performance of TDMA Protocols Under Self-Similar Traffic: A Simulation Study

Time division multiple-access (TDMA) protocols have been designed to operate primarily under uniform traffic patterns. However, real traffic measurements have proven to be rather self-similar. In this article, the authors examine the performance and behavior of TDMA family protocols (TDMA, RTDMA, LTDMA) under self-similar traffic. The comparison of the simulation results of the above protocols ...

BOSTON UNIVERSITY COLLEGE OF ENGINEERING Dissertation ENERGY-CONSERVING PROTOCOLS FOR WIRELESS DATA NETWORKS by

One of the most important factors which will influence the future success of ubiquitous mobile computing is the convenience and usefulness of the mobile devices. Major defining factors of the utility of these nodes will be the lifetime, size and weight of the power source. As active battery research does not predict a substantial increase in the energy capacity of today’s batteries, it is impor...

Energy-conserving Selective Repeat ARQ Protocols for Wireless Data Networks

Mobile communications implies reliance on a self-contained, portable power source, error-prone fading radio channels and subsequent need for acknowledgments. We propose two energy-conserving variants of the Selective Repeat ARQ protocol, which reduce the number of acknowledgments sent by the mobile node. The protocols are compared to previously described energy-conserving Go-Back-N ARQ protocol...

Design and analysis of low-power access protocols for wireless and mobile ATM networks

This paper describes the design and analysis of a low-power medium access control (MAC) protocol for wireless/mobile ATM networks. The protocol – denoted EC-MAC (energy conserving medium access control) – is designed to support different traffic types with quality-of-service (QoS) provisions. The network is based on the infrastructure model where a base station (BS) serves all the mobiles curre...

Analysis of Energy-Conserving Access Protocols for Wireless Identification Networks

A myriad of applications such as radio frequency identification (RFID) and smart card networks are emerging in which nodes are designed for extremely low-cost, large scale applications such that the replacement of batteries is not feasible. Energy conservation therefore becomes a major constraint. Classical access protocols are either not energy conserving or lead to unacceptable delays. In a p...
